Dr. Javier García Martínez, researcher and university professor, was president of IUPAC from 2022 to 2024 and will deliver the opening lecture of the COQC activities. He will discuss the chemical profession, which is undergoing a profound transformation driven by industry decarbonization, the fragmentation of supply chains, energy price volatility, tighter regulations, and the rapid adoption of automation and artificial intelligence. The chemical professional must not only generate knowledge or value, but also be capable of designing strategies, leading change, and translating science into solutions with economic, environmental, and social impact.
Next, Dr. Joan Sansaloni Valdivia will speak about entrepreneurship and industrial property. The activity will conclude with the dean of the Col·legi Oficial de Químics de Catalunya (COQC), Dr. Josep M. Fernández Novell, appointing Dr. Javier García Martínez as an Honorary Member of the COQC.

2026-06-04 12:30 2026-06-04 13:30 Europe/Madrid From Brussels to the Regions: Delivering Europe’s Chemical Industry Recovery

Europe’s chemical industry is under severe pressure. In response, the European Commission adopted the European Chemicals Industry Action Plan in July 2025. A central follow-up initiative is the Critical Chemicals Alliance, which brings together institutions and stakeholders to identify critical molecules and production sites, address vulnerabilities, and support strategic investment.

These objectives will only be achieved if they are translated into action where the industry actually operates: in Europe’s regions. This debate will therefore examine how regional authorities can help turn the EU policy framework into industrial reality — preserving production, supporting the transformation of strategic sites, enabling decarbonisation, and reinforcing Europe’s long-term competitiveness.
