2026-06-02 16:00 2026-06-02 17:30 Europe/Madrid Sustainability Matters: The Planet sets the Agenda – MeCCE Plenary Conference
In the early twenties, sustainability moved to the center of global agendas, with governments and companies committing to cut emissions, use resources more efficiently and mitigate climate, biodiversity and human-rights risks. Financial institutions pushed for evidence of action, and new regulations accelerated disclosure.
Today, geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, energy constraints and the rise of AI have shifted attention, while changes in reporting rules have slowed momentum. Yet this moment may be critical: this lecture will explore whether acting now through circularity, resource efficiency and smarter design can drive innovation, competitiveness and solutions that meet planetary needs.

Some of the most transformative advances in environmental biotechnology were not originally planned, they were discovered. Unexpected observations, when interpreted with curiosity and scientific rigor, have repeatedly opened new directions in wastewater treatment. The activated sludge process itself emerged from early aeration experiments that unintentionally revealed the remarkable capacity of microbial communities to purify water. Later, surprising polyphosphate accumulation led to enhanced biological phosphorus removal, while unexpected microbial aggregation generated aerobic and anaerobic granular sludge systems. More recently, unexplained nitrogen and methane conversions revealed processes such as ANAMMOX, autotrophic denitrification and DAMO microorganisms. These examples illustrate how serendipity, guided by scientific insight, has played a decisive role in shaping modern environmental biotechnology.

2026-06-03 15:00 2026-06-03 16:00 Europe/Madrid Brownfields Reimagined: Driving Decarbonization and Innovation in Industrial Clusters – MeCCE Plenary Conference
We are undergoing the largest transformation in the power and industrial sectors since the Industrial Revolution. While energy systems are rapidly shifting away from fossil fuels, the chemical industry still depends heavily on them, with only ~10% of EU raw materials coming from renewable sources. Replacing fossil feedstocks with alternative carbon sources such as CO₂, biomass, and waste offers major opportunities but also complex challenges.
Current assessments often analyse technologies in isolation under ideal conditions, ignoring the complexity of real industrial clusters, where interconnected value chains mean that changes in one process affect many others.
In the UNRAVEL project, we studied pathways to defossilize the petrochemical cluster in the Port of Rotterdam using a system-wide optimization model covering 52 processes and 17 alternative technologies. Results show that local infrastructure, resources, and energy constraints are decisive, and that key technologies include gasification, pyrolysis, Fischer–Tropsch, MTO, and MTA.
Full defossilization is not yet achievable due to limited green electricity and carbon sources, highlighting the need for a phased, system-level transition strategy.

Due to the Industry 4.0 revolution, several process challenges must be tackled: (i) How to quickly develop new models, (ii) how to automatically update them, (iii) how to estimate uncertainties
To address them, IFPEN has developed two strategies based on AI. They depend on the extent of knowledge about the chemical process. If a model structure is known, transfer learning is used. Otherwise, hybrid model strategies are proposed.
IFPEN is conducting several research projects on knowledge transfer methods, particularly Bayesian approaches.
IFPEN has developed a physics-informed hybrid modeling framework that integrates mechanistic knowledge with a neural network through automatic differentiation, differential residual loss minimization, and physical boundary constraints.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an exciting class of advanced materials showing significant potential for many gas capture applications due to their exceptionally high porosity and significant gas uptake capacities. These ground-breaking compounds earned their 3 pioneers the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Yet industrial use of MOFs is only now being realised, due to historic low manufacturing volumes by batch methods, and associated high production costs. Promethean Particles is changing this paradigm by using its continuous-flow technology to produce MOFs at a scale and price point that enables their industrial deployment for CO2 capture, biogas upgrading, water capture, and gas storage applications. The real-world use of MOFs is now not only feasible, but also commercially viable.

The challenges of the chemical-pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry in light of the new urban wastewater regulations

Schedule

2026-06-04 15:30 2026-06-04 18:30 Europe/Madrid The challenges of the chemical-pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry in light of the new urban wastewater regulations
The approval of Directive (EU) 2024/3019 on Urban Wastewater Treatment (UWWT) marks a turning point in European water quality policy and in the regulation of pollutants present in the urban water cycle.

The new regulation introduces more stringent requirements regarding so-called emerging contaminants, many of which are linked to sectors such as the chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Its transposition into the legal frameworks of Member States, scheduled before July 2027, will entail the progressive implementation of advanced treatments (tertiary and quaternary), as well as the strengthening of aspects such as energy efficiency, health surveillance, and analytical control.

This new framework poses significant technical, regulatory, and economic challenges. On the one hand, urban water cycle operators will need to adapt their infrastructure and processes; on the other, the industry faces a scenario in which the principle of extended producer responsibility gains importance, opening a debate on the distribution of costs and responsibilities.

At the same time, relevant uncertainties remain regarding the interpretation of the regulation, its practical application, and the most appropriate management models.

In this context, ADECAGUA is organizing, within the framework of Expoquimia 2026, a technical workshop aimed at providing clarity on the main elements of the new Directive, analyzing its implications for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors, addressing associated analytical, technological, and management challenges, and fostering dialogue among public administration, the scientific community, water operators, and industry.

The workshop is addressed to:
• Environmental and sustainability managers in industry
• Urban water cycle operators
• Engineering firms and technology companies
• Public administrations
• Professionals in the water sector and environmental regulation
