Smart Chemistry commits to innovation and competitiveness in the chemical industry

Smart Chemistry: Green Industry Deal will hold its fifth edition with a programme featuring 35 sessions focused on the major challenges of competitiveness, innovation and industrial transition in the chemical industry. The event will take place within the framework of Expoquimia, the International Meeting of Chemistry and Process Industries, to be held from 2 to 5 June 2026 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue.

The Smart Chemistry: Green Industry Deal, promoted by the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (Feique), will once again bring together companies, institutions and key agents of the industrial ecosystem at Expoquimia 2026 from 2 to 5 June, with a complete programme aimed at analysing the factors that today condition the future of the chemical sector and showing the technological solutions that are already marking its transformation.

The 2026 edition is structured around a fundamental idea: Europe will not be able to make effective progress towards its climate goals without a strong and competitive chemical industry. As a sector present in 98% of production activities, the chemical industrymust not only transform its own processes, but alsomake the transition of allvalue chains viable, providing key technologies, materials and solutions for decarbonisation, thecircular economy,  digitalizationand strategic autonomy.

European industrial context

The Smart Chemistry programme will combine an institutional approach, with discussion tables focused on the main factors that currently condition the competitiveness of the sector, and a business and technological approach, through talks and conferences aimed at showing trends, industrial solutions, application cases and real experiences that are already contributing to moving towards more sustainable production models. In total, the space will host 35 Smart Talks, conferences and round tables throughout the four days of Expoquimia.

Among the areas to be addressed are technologies for the decarbonisation of industrial processes, energy efficiency and electrification, the role of hydrogen and other renewable gases, the capture, use and storage of CO₂, as well as new solutions inthe circular economy, chemical recycling and waste recovery. Advanced materials, digitalisationand the applicationof artificial intelligence in chemical plants will also play a leading role, as well as new applications in the sector in strategic areas such as automotive, health, energy or consumer goods.

Along with this block of content, Smart Chemistry will host round tables focused on key issues for the future of the chemical industry, such as the need for a competitive energy price, trade defence and access to new markets, the protection of strategic productive capacities, the financing of industrial investment, a stable and efficient regulatory framework,  as well as attracting talent and new professional skills.

The initiative will feature the participation of 17 leading companies and organisations in the chemical sector, which will present technologies, industrial solutions and business experiences aligned with the objectives of the Green Industry Deal, reinforcing the role of the sector as a strategic industry for innovation and the climate transition; specifically, the following will participate: the Chemical Business Association of Tarragona (AEQT),  Air Liquide, BASF, Bondalti, Carburos Metálicos, the Centre for Technological Developmentand Innovation(CDTI), the Tarragona Chemical Clinic (ChemMed), Covestro, Ercros, FEQPA, Foresa, Grupo Industrias Químicasdel Ebro (IQE), Messer, Moeve,Química del Cinca, Quimidroga and Repsol.

The entire programme will take place in the Smart Chemistry Agora, located in Hall 2, stand E-54 of Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, and can be followed both in person and via streaming. Consolidated as one of the reference spaces of Expoquimia, Smart Chemistry was the most visited area of the show in the 2023 edition, with more than 15,000 attendees.
