‘Cleverscope': a plastic adapter and a smartphone get a low-cost video-laryngoscope

26 enero 2017

Direct laryngoscopy allows seeing the local cords and leading the tube to the right place, but its margin of error, depending on the patients physical characteristics, might get over 20% and develop complications. The event is unforeseen and only shows at the moment of the intubation. Video-laryngoscopes are the most effective solution in these cases, but its high cost limits their use and they are not present in all operation rooms.

Four million general anaesthesia are performed each year in Spain, including oro-tracheal intubation, which involves passing a plastic tube between the local cords in order to ensure oxygenation and ventilation in patients.

Soon this might be solved with a so-called ‘Cleverscope', a project led by doctor Lucas Rovira, an anaesthesiologist currently working at the Manises Hospital (Valencia). He has designed a prototype consisting of three parts that connect a conventional laryngoscope to the camera of any smartphone or tablet, therefore turning the resulting device into a low-cost but high-performance video-laryngoscope. This solution is expected to allow this useful technology and its implementation in many more operation rooms.

The Cleverscope project has been funded by the Medical Research Institute La Fe (IIS La Fe) and developed by the department of Design and Injection of AIMPLAS Plastic Technology Centre, both in Valencia.
